Coupland Quotes

Both of these quotes came from Douglas Coupland's "All Familes Are Psychotic" . . . and both made me smile.

"Life is a bowl of chainsaws."

For a brief moment the sun cut through the daily drizzle outside. Wade did a double-take: 'Aggh!' That yellow orb up there it burns my eyes - what is it?' --- 'It's about time we had a spot of sun,' Janet said. --- 'Sun - you called the golden orb the "sun" - what else do your people know that I do not?'

A Single Anecdotal Case Study

I have an ongoing theory that my caffeine consumption is not directly linked to my insomnia. After consuming 10 shots of espresso yesterday in order to stay functional during an 11-hour workday – 8 of which were spent on the mind numbing HR task of administering end-of-year performance appraisals, the insomnia monster failed spawn within my brain last night. Further studies will be pursued.

The event at work is over, thus the insane hours are behind me - at least for this month. The boss is off on vacation for a week, with the wooo and the whooo. The morning wake-up four shots of espresso have been consumed. Dead Can Dance tickets have been purchased, as has the Father's Day gift. Now I must prepare for all things tiki.

Potable water, caffeine, facilities, and AC

Is it too much to ask for potable water, caffeine, facilities, and AC while slaving away for 12-hours a day? I don’t think so. A water main break in the office building caused the city’s water department – yes, they actually have workers who clock-in AND perform their duties – to shut the building down last Thursday afternoon through Sunday. While allowed to re-enter the building this week, no potable is available. Thus, no washing of dishes or making of the coffee can occur. Must have the caffeine! Additional pipe breaks have shut down the washrooms periodically. Add on an HVAC system that isn’t working during the first heat wave of the summer and you would bitch also.

I'm melting

It's been an absolutely unproductive weekend - not that unproductivity is a bad thing. It's been over a month (think C11) since I was up past sunrise after a night of dancing and drinking. The evening ended at the same 24-hour Mexican restaurant as a previous post, though with a better outcome. It was just a few benign drunk Irish ex-pats this time.

What does this all mean - all the crap that needed to be done this weekend before the month of hell hours start again at the office still remain to be done. This includes installing the AC unit. While I realize that this is just the start of summer and it will get worse, two summers have yet to acclimate this temperate West Coast Goth boy to an atmosphere that you must swim through. No sympathy will be coming my way any time soon, I’m just bitching.

At least there will be a couple of respites during the next couple of weeks - namely VNV tomorrow night and a Tiki party on Saturday. I'm only hoping that this time the long hours equate to 10-hour days six days a week, not 12-hour days 7 days a week like in February.

Now back to the laundry and paying the bills . . .

Asshole in the Crowd

After staying down at the club till near sunrise last night, I stopped by one of the neighborhood 24-hour mexican restaurants for a hangover prevention burrito. While waiting patiently for my to go order, a voice behind me says,

"Hey gothic chick."

"Hey chick in black clothing!"

"Gothic chick - you want to share my chips?"

Now mind you - I did have my hair down and polish on the nails, but I wasn't wearing a skirt or done up in drag. Fetish pants, boots, and a dog collar yes - but a tight fitting fetish shirt. Maybe even a little five o'clock shadow by that point.

Finally - after not clueing into being ignored - the drunk walks over to my table and asks again if I want to share his chips. What kinda' stupid bastard thinks up that means of picking up chicks? Get a new pair of beer goggles!!!

If Peter Murphy hasn't hit your town (Seattle May 23 @ The Showbox, sorry about New Orleans), then I suggest the following ... if you like Sarah McLachlan or Tori Amos, then catch the opener - otherwise, avoid like the fucking plague. As for Peter, need I say anything other than fucking amazing. If anyone should be beatified, then he more so than John Paul (no offense to the Catholics out there). I know, I know, hyperbole - but you understand. For once, I was searched entering the Metro in Chicago, thus no pics to offer. He's still sexy as hell, even with a little pudge pudge going on. He's not alone on that one. Damn age!!!

Beyond the fortuitous run-ins with old friends, the weekend trip was filled with babies. They must be doing something to the water.
Serendipitous Trip

The return to Seattle is almost over. The purpose was business first and family second. Without little to no planning, and less communication, friends of the past were found by pure happenstance. Tomorrow will determine if the odds will increase for such serendipitous events to occur.

Chasing the Dream

During a deep philosophical and political discussion with a colleague, she suggested I read an excerpt from this article:

http://www.utne.com/pub/2004_125/promo/11349-1.html

I was so intrigued that I had to find and read the entire article. While I may not agree with every point, the author is not alone in his observations. Surviving in this nation that insists on continuing to chase the dream is becoming increasingly difficult. A poignant read with respect to my recent and current trails and tribulations.

Life in Transition

Damn insomnia - I should be used to it by now. This coming weekend's trip is leading to much anticipation and thought. While life is always in a state of flux, this likely - hopefully - will be a period of flow as opposed to ebb. On the lighter side, it will be good to see family, friends, and possibly even stop by the Merc.

I will generate my bio eventually so recognition might occur. Is a bit more patience too much to ask for?
